Schools do NOT care about DOE orders! Read on!!

SchoolsWeLike.com was first to report the Delhi Nursery Admissions Dates and even projected accurately that the porints critria data will be delayed as it happened last year too. This proves that schools hardly care about DOE orders and take it lightly.

Last year even after one month into admissions process many schools did not upload the data and no one complained or bothered.

Latest DOE Order Dec 2017 - Simplified and Explained in 3 Steps!

DOE Order 19th Dec 2017 - Simplified and Explained in 3 Steps!

New DOE Delhi order dated 19th Dec 2017 issued for Nursery Admissions in Delhi for session 2018-2019 is the best in the recent past years, and here we have simplified this for you -

Step I) This new circular is applicable only for -
  • All families except Economically Weaker Section (EWS) and Disadvantaged Group (DG) categories
  • Private, Unaided and Recognized Schools of Delhi, including Private Schools that ARE constructed on DDA land
  • Schools that are NOT run by government
Step II) In short -

  • GOOD NEWS! - This order is applicable for nearly all Private Schools of Delhi (almost)
  • MORE GOOD NEWS! - 55% seats are open for Aam Public :)
  • Point System -
    • All schools will have neighborhood/distance as main criteria (not in order but obvious)
    • Other key criteria that are expected to play major role are -
      • First born/girl child
      • Siblings
      • Alumni
      • Transfer/adoption cases
      • Special proficiency of parents
      • School transport
Step III) BAD news. Order has many loopholes!
  • 25% seats of reserved for EWS and DG categories (and admission for those seats will be handled by DOE itself), which is alright!
  • 20% seats can be blocked by schools under Management Quota! Aha, so 20% seats school management can fiddle with (ye public hai sab jaanti hai).

Nursery Admissions 2017-2018: Less Points? Name not in list? - Find the Answers Now!

Q. 1) We scored ‘55’ points in a school and the cut off points are ‘45’ (i.e. last kid on the list has 45 points), then why is my kid not on the list?

Possible reasons: 1) Your kid is 4+ years old and school has not considered your kid eligible for Nursery. (i.e. Pre-School) or given preference to 3+ yrs olds and vice versa, if your kid is 3+ yrs old and you have applied for Pri-Primary, the school will reject that, because as per DOE rules, the min. age for Pri-Primary is 4+ yrs as on 31st March.

Q. 2) What options we have if my kid can’t make it to any list ?
Suggestion: Tough question of the recent times let me go back to the poll results that we conducted recently (thanks to all who participated!), the numbers suggest that we all have applied at multiple schools but this doesn’t mean that anyone with just neighborhood points at hand can hope to get a seat as every seat has at least 30-40 applications and even 10th revised list wont bring the cutoff to that 20 points. See sample maths here that would give you some idea on how it might work or not work.

Kids with at least 40-50 points still have ‘some’ hope and can expect miracle in 1/10 applications.

Another agony that is being observed for kids that are 4+ yrs old (as on 31st Mar), and have applied for Nursery seat, have further less chances as schools don’t want to put 3 yrs with 4 yrs due to number of reasons.

Q. 3) Can I buy a seat (under management quota etc)?
There are schools and people who are ready to give you a seat for ‘money’, but they are not many. Some school has accepted (as reported by one of the parents) approx. Rs. 8-10 lakhs from few parents and given admissions last year. There are few other schools that are also ‘asking’ for donations (or at least talk about it) during interaction meetings.

I have come across people who claim that they can get you a seat in one of the highly ‘sought after’ south Delhi school for Rs. 2-3 lakhs under management quota.

If we talk about options after 1st Feb (the problem statement), probably there is some ray of hope from some private schools that are little better than ‘govt’ schools, but I don’t think many parents would even opt for that forget about sending kid to a govt. school.

For working parents who have offices in Gurgaon, Noida or surrounding areas, may plan to move out of Delhi and get their kids admitted there. Not an easy one, but little better than earlier one.

Then there are crazy suggestion floating around like (for 4+ yrs) – get your kid admitted to some good school in other state, pay one year fee there and put your kid in some average school here and next year when he/she will be 5+ yrs old, try for a better school here in 1st grade showing that you have got transferred to Delhi or something. Crazy isn’t it? But let me tell you – parents are serious on any and all options.

Can’t think of more as of now…this really needs a good brainstorming. If you come across any idea, please do share it. I am clearly not an expert in this area (admissions), but these views are coming from my recent good (and bad) experience, and thanks to all who keep sending their ideas, suggestions to me.

BREAKING!! Neighbourhood Criteria Scrapped for 298 Delhi Schools on Govt Land

HC judgment was due on 14th Feb is finally out and after a series of ups and downs on selection criteria for Nursery Admissions 2017-2018 session for 298 schools built on govt land in Delhi, finally HC has ruled that neighborhood criteria can not be FORCED onto these schools.

Delhi govt issued a notice that schools built on govt land must follow the special selection criteria, that mandated 75 seats to be filled with kids from neighborhood (i.e making distance as main criteria for selection. HC stayed the order mid of January, adding the chaos, and poor schools had started publishing their selection criteria and points breakup on DOE website, further leading to confusion.

In short -

  • Schools are free to setup their own selection criteria from the list of approved ones (that actually covers all that you can think of), but here is the favorite criteria that schools are expected to pick from,
  • While schools will continue to use distance as main criteria, expect the points to be dropped for distance and other standard criteria will get their place and slice
  • Schools will probably update the revised criteria and points on DOE site, but given that there is not much time left, so they may be updating it on their website, and at school notice boards. We shall try and update the database as soon as it is made available, here you can refer and search schools and their criteria and points as it stands today.

Good luck parents!

Schools gearing up to criteria and points, here is the inside story!

Schools gearing up to criteria and points and SWL brings you the "inside story"!

1400+ schools of Delhi are ready with their selection criteria and points, SchoolsWeLike.com brings you the inside story, wondering what the criteria is going to be, and how many points schools are going to assign to each one of them? Know them first and know them now.

I brought you story around DOE/Delhi Gov mistakes earlier in the day, and here our data team did a detailed study and survey and found that most of the schools are going to use these criteria and points for Nursery Admissions for 2017-2018 session:
  • Neighborhood - of course this is going to be there, and anyone can guess that. But note that schools are going to break it into slabs in terms of distance and most preferred slabs are going to be -
    • 0 km to 3 km (40-50 points)
    • 3 km to 5/6 km (20-30 points)
    • 6/7 km and above (under 10 points or less)
  • Sibling - Most of the schools are going to put this in their list and expect the points to be in the range of 20-30 points (in some cases schools would give extra points in case of two siblings in same school)
  • Alumni - Schools love to give advantage to parents that been alumni of same school. A typical 10-20 points to this one.
  • Staff - For all different reasons, schools prefer to give extra points to kids of staff members as this works for them as well, and teachers would stay with school if their kids also attend the same school. Nobody wants to lose good teachers. Expect 10 points to this criteria.
Other favorites are -
  • First Child/Girl Child/Single Parent - Schools have been giving points to these, and usually this would attract 10 points and this case really handy for many parents of course.
  • Transferable job - Schools prefer a fix number of kids that help them rotate the seats as they are promoted to senior classes, this helps them generate more revenue and profits (how? that's a long story for another day :D). Usually this attracts 10 points. Further if you are wondering if your job is considered a transferable job or not? Drop a message in comments with details of what sort of job you are in and I shall revert.
Good luck parents!

Nursery Admissions Delhi (2017-2018) - All you need to know about new circular/order issued on 19th Dec 2016

Fear is the mind-killer! So lets all understand what this new order is all about.
New DOE Delhi order dated 19th Dec 2016 issued for Nursery Admissions in Delhi for session 2017-2018 is bit confusing, and here I have simplified this for you in 3 simple steps -

Step I) This new circular is applicable only for -
  1. Families that do NOT belong to Economically Weaker Section (EWS) or Disadvantaged Group (DG) categories
  2. Only for admissions to Private, Unaided and Recognized Schools of Delhi
  3. Nursery Admissions in Delhi for session 2017-2018
  4. Schools that are NOT constructed on DDA land (there are 285 schools in Delhi that are on DDA land)
  5. Schools that are NOT run by government
Step II) In short -
  1. SOME GOOD NEWS! - This order is NOT applicable for about 50% of the "well-known" schools of Delhi as they are constructed on DDA land (Yes!), these schools (total 285 of them) must admit 75% of students from neighborhood. Detailed guidelines will be released by DOE in coming days.
  2. MORE GOOD NEWS! - This order is applicable for all other Private Schools of Delhi, and most of those are either Small-Mid sized Private Schools, or they are one of those 5-7 star category schools of Delhi that have their own land.
Step III) Bit of BAD news. We all make mistakes, every system has loopholes, so does this order (that has mistakes and loopholes)

Point#7 in the order refers to DOE order issued on 06-01-2016 (No. F.DE.15/Act-l/4607/l3/2015/5686-5696), which states that schools shall not adopt criteria abolished in that old order, the problem is that the original list had 62 criteria, but new order has restricted use of 51 criteria hence leaving open several disputed ones, here are few criteria that schools may use to their advantage -
  • Points for management quota - old order leaves room for this by stating "However, if required, the children of the staff and the children of the members of the Management Committee can be given admission by making it a criterion and assigning points"
  • Special ground (parents with proficiency in specific areas of art etc)
  • First child
  • School transport users
Although there would only be 25% seats that schools can fiddle with, and we hope DOE fixes this loophole to ensure admission process is fair ever.

Here is the admission schedule as published in the order :

Nursery Admissions Delhi Schools - 2016-17...More schools post nursery criteria

More schools post nursery criteria...
More schools, including some of the popular ones, have announced their admission criteria and points distribution systems. Not everyone is starting registration on January 1, 2016, and at most schools, children and siblings of alumni have a real edge over others. At some, parents' achievement, too, will matter.
Laxman Public School (LPS) has divided 'open seats' remaining after reserving for EWS (25%), children with special needs (3%), children of present staff (2%) and management (20%), further into quotas for different criteria. For siblings of enrolled children, 15% seats have been set aside. These "shall be filled through draw of lots out of all the registered sibling applicants residing within 12km radius of the school. The remaining applicants shall be considered for admission as per the parameters/criteria and points for open seats (general category)," says the school's admission notice. Similarly, alumni kids have 5% seats to themselves, girls and children of staff, another 5% each. While, to be eligible for these quotas, the applicants have to live within 12km, those living beyond that distance but belonging to these categories will still have an edge. In the points distribution, distance (zero-12km) has been allotted 70 points; siblings of enrolled students get 20, alumni kids and girls get five. But this entire lot will compete for 46 seats out of a total of 184.
Vasant Valley School has included in its list of criteria, neighbourhood (same as distance, maximum of 25), alumni (20, 10 for each parent), siblings (20), first-born child (10) and "proven track record of parents" which, interestingly, gets the same maximum points as distance—25. Its admission notice elaborates on this last parameter offering a list of option, including awards or recognitions for "sports/social service", "arts", "original research/ publication/ recognition received in the area of science/ social science/ law/ humanities", "civil rights/government work/ defence services" and, finally, "any other". A state-level recognition fetches three points, national-level, four and international five.
The Indian School has kept it simple. It has 154 general category seats and there are only three criteria with points against them—distance (60), sibling (20) and first-born child (20). While LPS and The Indian School are starting admissions on January 1, 2016, some others are starting later. Carmel Convent School is starting on January 2 and Mount St Mary's in the Delhi Cantonment on January 4, 2016.

Nursery admissions to be more transparent from this year...

To make the nursery admissions transparent from this year, the Delhi government has asked private schools to upload their admission criteria and details about the applicants online.
On Tuesday, the government announced admission guidelines for the 2016-17 academic session. Like last year, the process will begin from January 1.
Schools have been asked to upload online all the information about the children who apply and those who are selected.
They have also been asked to publicise their admission criteria online, before the procedure starts.
A circular issued by the Directorate of Education (DoE) said: “All private unaided recognised schools shall upload their criteria adopted for admission of ‘Open Seats at Entry Level Classes’ for the academic session 2016-17 on this directorate’s website. The schools shall also publicise their admission criteria on their website, if available, also well in advance before the start of admission process for public view.”
Schools have also been asked to prominently display the admission criteria and total number of seats available at the entrance.
“All the schools shall upload the details of children who apply for admission under ‘Open Seats’ and marks allotted to each of them by the schools under their point system, on the module developed by the department. The schools shall also upload the details of children admitted and wait-listed under and marks allotted to them by the schools, under their point system,” the circular said.
The government is also working on a plan to make admissions for the Economically Weaker Section (EWS) completely online — from filling up of forms to selection of children through a computerised lottery system.
Nursery admissions in Delhi schools are done on the basis of a point system. Schools allot points to a child out of 100, on the basis of criteria including distance of residence from school, sibling studying in the school, if a parent is an alumni, if the child is a girl. There are some school-specific criteria too, which schools were allowed to decide after a High Court order earlier this year.
